Iconographies

RSVP

Whilst growing up in the Ukrainian Catholic Church my world was filled with icons. They were vastly more colorful than the B+W TV of my 60s/70s childhood. Due to the message they relayed of perfected worlds beyond this one, they stoked my imagination while being burned into my psychic retina. Years later I see how this way of seeing the world has erupted in my artwork – as many of my pieces are forms of iconography. The styles of these works range from Greek pottery (Athenian Geometric and Attic Black Figure), ancient Ukrainian pysanky motifs, Japanese prints, to modernist constructions. The through-line for me in these pieces is the use of figures, symbols of fauna and flora, and the eggshells themselves as means to create views into these perfected worlds via this means of pictorial representation.
