“Modern Medieval” opening at the Ivy Brown Gallery on Thursday, January 23, 6-8pm is a captivating two-person exhibition featuring the works of Shiri Mordechay and Pablo Garcia. The exhibition creates a rich tapestry of past and present, blending intricate details and thematic depth.

Shiri Mordechay’s paintings are a whirlwind of emotion and complexity, drawing the viewer into a vibrant and dynamic world. Each piece is packed with countless details, your eyes are constantly darting from one part to another, unsure where to settle. Her subject matter leans towards the dark and macabre, yet it is infused with a sense of humor that leaves you questioning whether to laugh or cry. This duality creates a compelling tension in her work, inviting prolonged contemplation and emotional engagement.

Pablo Garcia’s creations are a fascinating fusion ranging from his Baroque aesthetics to science fiction elements. His elaborate reliefs are meticulously crafted from an eclectic mix of materials, including raw silk fibers and barbed wire. These works are not only visually arresting but also carry a strong religious undertone, adding layers of meaning and interpretation. Garcia’s pieces transport viewers into a world where the opulence of the Baroque era meets the speculative imagination of science fiction. In his last series of works “Neurowarfare”, Pablo reflects about a not so sci-fi distant scenario, the weaponization of the human brain.

The inspiration for this collaboration was conceived when the artists shared a studio space at the 4 Heads Residency in Governors Island which triggered their creative dialogue for this exhibition. Together, Mordechay and Garcia present “Modern Medieval,” an exhibition that takes you on a journey through time. Their works complement each other, creating a seamless blend of historical reference and contemporary innovation. The exhibition is a sensory and intellectual feast, rich in detail and narrative, offering a unique experience that bridges the gap between the past and the present. Through their combined artistry, “Modern Medieval” invites viewers to explore the intricate and often surprising connections between different epochs, revealing the timeless nature of human creativity and expression.
